The interchanges and their <br /> projected times are N.C. 54/7 minutes, U.S. 15-501/ 10 <br /> minutes, Whitfield Road/ 14 minutes, and New hope Church <br /> Road/ 17 minutes. Traffic volumes on the Orange County <br /> Portion of 1-40 are expected to average 12,000-14,000 trips <br /> per day during tins first year of use and about 20,000-22,000 <br /> by the year 2000. 14 <br /> Orange County JPA <br /> The Orange County portion of the *IPA is composed of <br /> approximately 41,300 acres. The area contains three <br /> geographic divisions with the following approximate acreages: <br /> - North Chapel Hill - 19,900 acres <br /> - University Lake Watershed - 19,200 acres <br /> - Southern Triangle - 2,200 acres <br /> The North Chapel Hill area is experiencing the most intense <br /> growth pressures due to the northward expansion of Chapel <br /> Hill and the construction of 1-40 which traverses the area <br /> from the southeast to the northwest. <br /> Population <br /> Population figures from the "Chapel Hill/Carrboro <br /> Thoroughfare Plan" give an estimated 1979 JPA population of <br /> • 9,382..5 Projections to the year 2000 call for 34,330, an <br /> • increase of 266%.
