In recent months there have been several developments which relate to special chartered school <br /> districts: one special chartered school district has tried, through the courts, to relinquish its <br /> charter; one special chartered school district has *asked the State Board to use its authority to J <br /> extend the unit's boundaries without the consent of the county board of education; one special <br /> chartered school district and one county board of education have endorsed the concept of two- <br /> county school system merger; several "boards of county commissioners have exerted pressure on <br /> boards of education to merge; several boards of county-commissioners 'have failed to levy voted <br /> supplemental school district taxes; one "bvard of county commissioners, after reaching an impass <br /> with its three boards of educaton, has asked the Department of Public Instruction to conduct a <br /> facility study of all schools in the county; groups such as Chamber of Commerce, PTA and Leaeue <br /> of Women Voters are expressing more interest in mercer; and the General Assembly"has, on several <br /> occasions, considered legislation which would eliminate special chartered school districts. <br /> 4 <br />
