DISTRIBUTED
Hobert R. Reeber
Route 7 Box 254A
Chapel Hill , N.C.27514
April 4, 1985
Mr. Don Willhaitp &mmissioners Chairman
Orange County Board of Commisioners
Hillsborough, N-C,
Dear Mr. Willhoit:
Recently I have been following your comments about
studying issues related to possible merger of the County's
two school systems. As you can imagine other school systems
have considered this for their specific situation. I have
enclosed a copy Of one such study and would appreciate it if
you distributed it to the other Board members. Last month I
gave the same information in testimony to the Chapel
Hill-Carrboro Board of Education. I have also enclosed
f school size and
brief study that I did of the effects. o
parent involvement an the quality of education. In my
opinion when the school system gets to large and distances
increase between administrators and parents the quality Of
education declines rapidly. Parent contributions and parent
-
volunteer inputs are free and with encouragement can make a
significant contribution to the educational environment. In
the next 5 to 15 years the County will grow significantly
and we should plan now to keep the concept of a neighborhood
school and a local school administration responsible and
responsive to parent and voter concerns.
Sincerely
