005
Memorandum 1
Page 3
February 13, 1985
5. Kitchen Renovations $225,000
All school sites
The most crucial needs are at Ephesus, Glenwood and Estes Hills
Elementary Schools. When Ephesus was built in 1972, the decision was
made to cut the kitchen from the construction plan and make the school a
satellite school. Since 1972, the school population has increased, and an
additional pod has been added to the school. Ephesus, with its present
student population, needs a kitchen area twice the size of the existing one.
Glenwood and Estes Hills both need walk-in freezers and refrigera-
tors. The reach-in freezers, which are approximately 20 years old or
older of the old home type, at these schools, require excessive
repairs because they must be housed in storerooms without adequate
ventilation. Replacementoof old, outdated equipment is needed also at
the other schools.
The total cost for these capital improvement projects is $3,251,000.
The committee, during its deliberations, also discussed several
alternative financing possibilities for the Board to pursue with the
commissioners. Those were as follows: ••
1. Bond Referendum
2. Half-Cents Sales Tax Revenue
3. Special Countywide Tax Earmarked for Capital Improvements
4. Bank Loan
The committee recommends that the Board pursue with the com-
missioners a funding source that will allow the system to proceed
immediately with all five projects.
RESOLUTION: Be it therefore resolved that the Board
of Education adopt the following long range capital
improvement priorities and pursue with the commissioners
a funding source that would allow the school system to
proceed immediately with all five projects:
1. Multipurpose Space - Estes Hills, Glenwood
2. Air Conditioning - Phillips, Frank P. Graham
3. Cafeteria Expansion and Renovation, Media Center
Expansion - Chapel Hill High School
4. Elementary Schools Media Center Expansion - Carrboro,
Estes Hills, Glenwood
5. Kitchen Renovations - (all sites)
44, /JI4 <.
(Mrs.) ry House
Assistant Superintendent for
Support Services
