Mayer
Superintendent
''tt
FROM: Gerry House IV,
Assistant S perintendent for Support Services
SUBJECT: Long Range Capital Improvement Plan
DATE: February 13, 1985
The Long Range Capital Improvement Planning Committee was organized
last fall to review the school system's facilities improvement plan
and to present recommendations for update and modifications.
The committee recommends the following capital project priorities
for the Board's consideration and adoption:
1. Multipurpose Space $816,000
Glenwood, Estes Hills Elementary Schools
These are the two elementary schools that do not have a large activity
and/or gathering space. The initial capital improvement plan (mid-70's)
was to build multipurpose facilities at Frank P. Graham, Glenwood and
Estes Hills. Frank P. Graham's multipurpose room was built in 1978,
but due to a lack of and/or redirection of funds, multipurpose spaces
at the other two schools have not been built. The lack of this type
space limits the art, music and physical education programs, as well
as limits the large group experiences that can be made available to
students. Student assemblies and cultural arts programs are virtually
impossible at Glenwood and Estes Hills because there is no space large
enough to accommodate the student body. In addition, classroom space
is being utilized for art, music and physical education classes. With
the projections of increased elementary enrollment at the elementary
level, these classrooms will be needed to house additional students.
2. Air Conditioning $1,500,000
Phillips Jr. High
Frank P. Graham Elementary School (Primary Building,
Administration/Cafeteria Building)
Until the mid-seventies, five of the older buildings had no air-
conditioning. Because of problems with the heating systems at
Carrboro, Glenwood and Estes Hills, these three schools were targeted
as first priorities for HVAC retrofit, leaving Frank P. Graham and
Phillips as the remaining school sites without air conditioning.
