.085 <br /> • -1AN:10pia, . - ; <br /> - - <br /> soLLTION: Continued <br /> Public health nurses have supervised, the students' follow-up activities which have <br /> included: <br /> 1. tabulating parental responses from referral letters <br /> 2. contacting parents by phone, letter and/or home visits <br /> 3. talking with teachers about students' dental needs <br /> 4. identifying community resources for obtaining dental care <br /> 5. arranging for School Health Funds for parents in need of financial assistance <br /> 6, arranging transportation with home/school coordinators to dental. providers. <br /> Students have kept daily logs of their activities with plans and outcomes noted. Public <br /> health nurses reviewed the logs weekly to monitor progress and results. <br /> Evaluation of the follow-up program has been obtained by comparing compliance rates . <br /> each year, starting with the 1981 rates (when public health nurses conducted all follow-up <br /> activities). Subjective evaluation has also been obtained through written reports of <br /> nurses and students. <br /> CDUNTY R.OLE: <br /> • The Orange County Health Department's role in the Dental Screeniim and Follow-up <br /> program has consisted of: <br /> 1. Identifying the problem of low compliance among children referred for dental care <br /> and the relationship of follow-up. <br /> 2. Initiating the development of a program to involve dental hygiene students with <br /> public health nurses in the follow-up component of the dental screenings. <br /> • 3. Jointly planning, sponsoring and supervising the follow-up program with the <br /> Dental Hygiene Student Supervisor. <br /> 4. Providing training of dental hygiene students in referral/follow-up techniques, <br /> communication and documentation. <br /> 5. Introducing students to the school/community settings . <br /> 6. Coordinating/organizing the screenings, referral and follow-up. <br /> 7. Providing facilities and support for follow-up activities (access to telephones, <br /> office space, etc.) <br /> 8. Serving as a referral resource for dental care of referred children and providing <br /> some financial assistance for care of referred children (school health funds) in <br /> the Orange County Health Department Dental Clinic. <br /> CO' <br /> There were no extra expenditures incurred by the program, except for the e4kra:st me <br /> spent by the School Health Coordinator in planning and coordination of the program.) <br /> Funding for the screenings come from School Health and Dental Health budget of the< <br /> Health Department, which are state and local funding. <br />
