22 <br /> 5. 1 PURPOSE <br /> The purpose of the probationary period is to evaluate <br /> the employee's suitability for continued employment. <br /> This period is an essential extension of the selection <br /> process, and provides the time for effective adjustment <br /> of the new employee or elimination of those whose <br /> performance will not meet acceptable standards. <br /> 5.2 POLICY <br /> It is the policy of Orange County that new employees <br /> appointed to permanent positions serve a probationary <br /> period and other employees may be placed in <br /> probationary status as outlined in this procedure. <br /> 5.3 PROCEDURE <br /> 5.3. 1 New emplpyees appointed to permanent positions <br /> will serve a probationary period as follows: <br /> -An employee appointed initially or promoted to a <br /> full-time, permanent position will serve a <br /> • probationary period of six (6) months <br /> -A Law Enforcement Offier will serve a six (6) <br /> month probationary period. <br /> 5. 3. 2 Before an employee's completion of the <br /> probationary period, the department head will <br /> complete Performance Approval Form and submit it <br /> to Personnel Department indicating whether the <br /> employed is recommended for permanent status. <br /> 5.3. 3 A new appointee may be dismised without appeal <br /> rights at any time during the probationary <br /> period if the department head determines that <br /> the employee is not satisfactorily performing <br /> his assigned duties. <br /> 5.3.4 The reasons for dismissal shall be documented <br /> and filed with the Personnel Director. <br /> 5.3.5 If the employee has successfully completed the <br /> probationary period, and retained in his <br /> position, the employee will be considered a <br /> • permanent employee. <br /> 5.3• 6 An employee serving a probationary following <br /> initial employment in a permanent position will <br /> receive all benefits provided in accordance with <br /> this ordinance. <br /> 5.3. 7 Permanent employees who have served the initial <br /> probationary period may be placed in a <br /> probationary status at any tme for a period not <br /> to exceed six (6) months.
