What is the Affordable Housing GAP in Orange County and Special Needs? <br /> Definition Of Affordable Housing <br /> Housing is a basic human need. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), <br /> affordable housing is housing that costs its occupant (owner or renter) no more than 30% of their gross monthly <br /> household income. When calculating housing costs you should include not only rent or mortgage payments, but <br /> also utility costs, and when applicable, real estate taxes, property insurance, mobile home park and/or lot rental <br /> fees, homeowner association fees, and/or condominium fees. <br /> There are different factors that are assessed when looking across the spectrum of affordable housing needs: <br /> • Income and Poverty <br /> • Rental and Owner Occupied Housing Stock and Housing Costs <br /> • Cost Burden <br /> • Housing for Special Needs, Persons with Disabilities, Seniors, Homeless, etc. <br /> • Other Housing Problems <br /> 3 <br />
