A performance by NC Youth Tap Ensemble is an
exciting opportunity for our school community as dance is woven into our daily lives at
Northside- it is incorporated into our physical education program, two afterschool
programs, numerous special events and in general is an important part of the culture of the
school. The North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble performance will "feature rhythmic dance
from a variety of genres and include "brief stories about the history of tap dance".
Northside students will have the opportunity to see fellow North Carolinians, ages 8-18
come together in a performance that has received worldwide recognition. This dance
performance would expose our students to performance art, world history as well as our
local community(the Ensemble is based out of Chapel Hill). We would hope that NES
students could identify with these young dancers and in turn be inspired and encouraged
to pursue their own artistic dreams and goals.
Geo_grphy of Audience
All of the Cultural Arts performances will be for the entire student body at NES. Northside
Elementary currently enrolls 485 students representing 7 races and ethnicities:
approximately 14% are Asian, 23% are Black/African American, 14%are Hispanic, less
than 1%are American Indian/Alaskan Native, 4%are Mixed Race, less than 1% are Native
Hawaiian/Pacific Islander and 45% are White. NES has 51..4% boys and 48..6%girls and
93.4% of students are ages 6-11. NES has approximately 9.5% Limited English Proficiency
(LEP) students and 9% of students have special needs. As an indicator of socioeconomic
status, Northside Elementary School has the second highest free and reduced priced lunch
in the district at 38.5%. The PTA of Northside feels it is very important to bring relevant art
and performance programs to Northside students who othe 'ise would not be able to
afford to go see these programs at UNC or the Carrboro Arts Center.
