DocuSign Envelope ID:022328A8-D9F2-4935-B266-927E481327A4
the determined effort to achieve civil and human rights particularly for people of color,as well
as for all Americans. Our hope is eventually to build Free Spirit Freedom into a vibrant
community resource, collecting old photographs,historic images, narratives and documentation
for an on-going public exhibition and continued interactive programming that will instill a
sense of being and place while promoting diversity and inclusiveness in local affairs.
• Current Programs and Services–a brief list.
• Hillsborough Last Fridays—free concert series along with visul arts, crafts, children's
activities and food vendors;
• Last Fridays Art Walk—Hillsborough galleries and studios present artists and their art;
• Hillsborough Handmade Parade—featuring handmade puppets, now a local tradition;
• Hillsborough Downtown Arts&Crafts Show—an annual April event;
• Free Spirit Freedom—celebrating Orange County's diverse history and future through
photography and narrative;
• Sculpture Tour—a bi-annual exhibit of outdoor sculpture in Hillsborough, currently
featuring Stickworks;
• HAC Gallery&Gift Shop,a consistent venue for works by local artists;
• Art Cycle—collecting and distributing donations of new and used supplies for local
school classrooms.
• Arts Alive—a performance series of poetry and literature.
• Parlor Concerts—providing fine music in an intimate setting.
• Proposed Uses of Grant Funds–location, date,artists involved. Include whether you have
undertaken similar activities in the past. Include approximate number of audience per program;
geography of audience; mix of ethnicity, age, and gender.
Free Spirit Freedom has progressed to the point where we see the need to design and produce a
hardcopy version of the images that we have acquired and to accompany these images with
documentary and anecdotal short essays—i.e.,a photo book.We have numerous photographs—
some acquired by scanning old photos loaned to us by community members,and others
acquired by shooting new images with the artistic assistance of Jacquelin Liggins and Joanie
Alexander.Along with these photographs,we are obtaining oral histories of the places,people
and events. Free Spirit Freedom now wants to make these images and stories more accessible
to the general public.
The first book,our pilot,will focus on our`Freedom through Faith and Knowledge' collection.
We will incorporate images of the one and two-room schoolhouses and the larger consolidated
schools that operated during the days of segregation and that were critical in the struggle and
path to freedom.Joanie Alexander and Renee Price will be responsible for the book layout and
design. Renee Price,with assistance from Dr. Freddie Parker,will conduct documentary
research and interviews to compose the essays to accompany the images.
Because we see the need to engage younger generations in perpetuating this history, Free Spirit
Freedom also will seek to include poetry or prose that interprets the photographs and stories
through the lens of our young people.We have connections with community youth
