I
have used these records to estimate the work involved in the proposed restoration
project.
Community Impact
The digitizing of the photographs will make if possible to
(1) preserve this history in a library archive,
(2) reprint the images for public exhibits as part of the 2001 Anniversary of
EmPOWERment, and
(3) generate copies and online resources for educational programs in Orange
County.
As anyone who walks along Rosemary Street and through the Northside
neighborhood can testify, this documentary work, created to advocate for
preservation of the neighborhood, is now a record of the historical predecessor to the
present landscape. While groups like EmPOWERment work to maintain affordable
housing and protect the neighborhoods, new buildings and more student housing
have drastically changed Northside.
In addition, in the normal course of time, many of the elders and leaders in these
photographs have died. The children are grown - some staying in the community;
others moving out as house prices and taxes rise.
While my work cannot stop time or progress, it can pay tribute to Orange County
history and keep memories alive. Regenerating this documentary material in digital
form is critical to that tribute.
Simone - Portraits of Northside- page 2
