The objective is to translate the original print
materials into a digital format so that they can be reproduced more easily for
exhibition and preserved in the digital archives at UNC.
Background
In 1996-1998 I conducted oral history interviews, photographed residents and
collected old family photos in the Northside Community in Chapel Hill, NC. This is
the area where African Americans first came to live as farmers and later as laborers
at UNC Chapel Hill. Many of the people I interviewed in 1998 were born in the area
before it was incorporated. They witnessed the daily travel to and from the
University laundry, attended the Orange County Training School (now Northside
School), and worshiped in the local churches.
The photographic work and text were exhibited at the Chapel Hill Town Hall, the
Horace Williams House, and the Chapel Hill Public Library in conjunction with
several community programs. At the end of the project the oral history tapes were
placed in the archive at the Wilson Library at UNC. With the advent of digital
technology, those tapes were transferred to digital storage and are now available for
listening.
The Town of Chapel Hill purchased some of the photographic composites. Others
were donated to the Midway Business Center, a business incubator that includes
the offices of EmPOWERment, Inc., an affordable housing program serving Orange
County.
Work to be done
Over the years, there has been a lot of wear and tear from poor lighting, changes in
air conditions, and general aging of the materials. The Northside community has
also changed radically. It is now more important than ever to transfer this history to
a format that can be archived and reproduced.
On the occasion of the 2016 celebration of the 20th Anniversary of EmPOWERment, I
am proposing a project to scan and recreate the original silver & color print
composites using digital technology.
Simone - Portraits of Northside -page 1
