We
are eager to see her visual material digitized so that it can be added to the
historical archives already holding her recordings.
As an organization focused on historical preservation in the community, we see
the critical importance of her work. Many of the people in Simone's photos are
legendary, part of the weave of the history of Northside. The day-to-day
activities she has captured preserve a community that is changing rapidly. Her
composite images are filled with the spirit of the community, with an intangible
energy that isn't always evident just driving up and down the streets. These
images will continue to inspire future generations in their understanding of this
historic place.
We at the Jackson Center are very excited about this project. We have enjoyed
looking at Simone's photographic work, but it is true that the original pieces are
showing age. The black and white images have been bleached out and the color
images are losing the vivid colors that make them such a unique complement to
the black and white work. Simone has been generous with her exhibition of this
in public venues, but time and lots of light have taken a toll. If the work is
digitized it can be reprinted and it can be preserved as archival material
available long into the future.
We urge the Orange County Arts Council support of this important work.
Sincerely,
11LIson Vaughan
Senior Director
Marian Cheek Jackson Center
