Include
approximate number of audience per program; geography of audience; mix of race, ethnicity, age, and
gender. Discuss how arts program will be integrated into the curriculum.
The UNC Hospital School is a part of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools system and is located within the
(iNC Hospitals complex in Chapel Hill. The UNC Hospital School's mission is to provide educational services
that meet the unique needs of the hospitalized children and adolescents enrolled there. The goal of the
Academic Troubadour Program is to bring into the hospital a variety of academically enriching experiences to
pediatric patients who would otherwise not be exposed to the similar learning experiences of their school-
aged peers. This program will include sessions involving visual and performing arts, cultural exposure, and
artistic workshops. Through visual and performing arts workshops, students will have a chance to express
themselves artistically, learn about different musical instruments, and work with different art media. One of
the UNC Hospital School's goals is to increase students' understandings of different cultures. Through
workshops, such as African Drumming Circles, Native American storytellers, East Indian art, and the Spanish
culture experience, we can address this goal.
The Academic Troubadour programs will be open to all students, Pre-K through high school, that the UNC
Hospital School serves and will be hosted in varying locations with the hospital to increase access for all.
Approximately 25-40 students will participate in each scheduled activity. The children who are hospitalized
are all ages, of mixed races, and have various backgrounds in regards to ethnicity, language(s) spoken in the
home, time living in the United States, etc. A proposed monthly schedule of arts, activities, and hosting
locations is attached and includes the fee budgeted for each artist/activity.
The effectiveness of each program will be measured at the end of the visit when a developmentally
appropriate survey will be conducted with each student participant. Results will determine if a given activity
was beneficial, educational, and/or e joyable to the pediatric patients who were involved. Questions on the
survey will include a rating scale of how much the student e joyed the workshop, what they learned from the
workshop, and if they would recommend that other students experience the activity.
