Art projects and
journaling are used to help the girls express themselves and be creative. Field trips are
coordinated to also address these topics (for example, in the Spring, we tour the UNC Campus
and talk about our future self, with the idea that we want the girls to envision themselves as
potential college attendees). T-shirts help give the group an identity and are invaluable on field
trips to help quickly identify which girls are in our group. We also hold several Science
Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEaM) sessions after school on two different topics
(coding and making LED lit bracelets/circuits). This year we plan to take a field trip to
Spoonflower in Durham, a company that allows individuals to design, print, and use their own
fabrics,to design and include the designed fabric in our quilt projects.
Ephesus Girls'Group will begin in October 2016 and run through the end of May 2017. The
group meets during the school day (lunch period)twice a month and also for about eight after-
school sessions. Additionally, the group goes on at least four field trips after school during the
school year. The community service projects are generally completed in the Spring quarter and
followed up with field trips to the donation sites. The anticipated outcomes are that the girls
are empowered to see themselves as leaders and change makers. The quilts and origami
flowers that are donated to the community groups are physical evidence of the artistic
community service projects.
For evaluation purposes, we conduct a pre- and post-evaluation of the girls in the group, and
also gather anecdotal information from the girls to gauge their excitement and interest. We
determine Ephesus Girls'Group to be successful if the fourth and fifth graders are engaged in
the planned activities and if the post-test surveys show growth in the girls' knowledge about
the topics explored in the group.
