3?
Orange County announced a County-Campus in November of 2006, which
included a two-story, 24, 000 square foot new library facilio). This does not
include the possible Heritage Center, which would remain in the downtown
Whitted Facility.
4. That the Orange County Public Library combine the collections, staff, and
services presently located at McDougle Middle School and the Century Center,
and establish one branch library facility to serve the Town of Carrboro, western
unincorporated areas of the Chapel Hill Township, and the southern area of
Bingham Township. It is estimated that given the current 20-year population
projections and a design population of 40,000, a newly constructed facility of
25,000 square feet would be needed.
At this time, Orange County Libraries - Carrboro McDougle Branch and the
Cybrary provide 8,060 square feet of library facility to the Township of Carrboro.
Combined these branches provide 70 hours of service to the community of
Carrboro. The estimated population served by these facilities is 17,456 The
population has not reached 3/ of the design population for the expansion project.
5. It is estimated
that, given the current 20-year population projections, a newly constructed facility
of 10,000 square feet would be needed. The Library should continue to investigate
co-location in the new Efland-Cheeks Middle School in the short term if public
library user service needs and space requirements can be met with that
arrangement.
Orange County Public Library Director met and discussed the co-location of the
new Efland-Cheeks Middle School with School staff. It was determined that the
design of the facility was not conducive to this shared agreement for security and
staffing purposes. The Library Director has been approached by a local
foundation regarding grant seed money to begin an Efland/Cheeks library
facility. At this time, there is no date associated with expiration of this $10, 000
donation.
6. That the population growth in the Cedar Grove Township is monitored and plans
be considered to expand the library facility in the Orange County Services Center
as indicated.
Cedar Grove Branch Library has been monitored since the opening in April 2004.
Patronage use (577 in July 2004 to 1120 in July 2006) of the Cedar Grove
Branch has doubled in the two-year period. The hours were expanded to better
serve the corinmunity in summer 2006
7. That rural community nodes be evaluated for the establishment of cybraries to
provide access to more distant library resources; or, alternatively, reestablish
