<br /> learn about other cultures. Students attend Art and Music classes for 45 minutes each week. In Music
<br /> they learn:about music through singing, listening, moving, composing, and playing instruments. In Art
<br /> they use paint, drawing materials, clay, fibers and mixed medi,um. Students also study artists, cultures
<br /> and types of art.
<br /> In our extra-curricular theater program, students have created and produced full-length theatrical
<br /> productions for the past five years including "Seussical Jr.," "The Jungle Book," "School House Rock,"
<br /> and "Charlie&the Chocolate Factory."This past year, 118 students,created and produced "The
<br /> Wizard of Oz"'after school, over a three-month period. The school community provided impressive
<br /> support of close to $2,000 in donations and services. In addition, 5th graders at CES participate in a
<br /> 24-hour play festival where students get an intense 24 hour theatrical experience. Students are given
<br /> the opportunity to either be a director or an actor and within 24 hours,they block,: costume, prop and
<br /> rehearse their specific play. This year we performed seven plays. The school has received support to
<br /> put on a production of"The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe"for the 20151201::61 school year.
<br /> In 2014/2015, CES had art programming in our after school clubs where students experienced
<br /> drumming, guitar playing, sewing, film, dance, cartooning and crocheting/knitting. Our music teacher
<br /> offers STOMPing Sounds twice a year which: is a movement club exploring:,the music of the group:
<br /> STOMP and helping students,make music using everyday items as instruments. Additionally,we
<br /> offered an after school club called Young Rernbrandts (run by an outside group)which teaches
<br /> students drawing skills. Our summer programming includes a two week Summer Theater camp and a
<br /> Dance Camp run through Community Schools.
<br /> Ill. Proposed Use of Grant Funds
<br /> Carrboro Elementary School strives to bring diverse,performers to our school community with unique
<br /> perspectives on multicultural: education through music, dance, and storytelling.We are requesting the
<br /> assistance of the Orange County Arts Commission: in bringing two performance groups to CES. We
<br /> believe the two:groups we have chosen will have a significant impact on our students who are already
<br /> exposed to a variety of different cultures through their diverse school community.
<br /> Mister G, is a Latin GRAMMY nominated musician and is a leading
<br /> figure in the children's music world. Mister G has two acclaimed bilingual:CDs and his video for
<br /> Vamos a la Maya"was featured on national:television during Hispanic Heritage Month, ARQ..E1Qsta,
<br /> his literacy-th!emed:, bilingual CD, was released in September 2�0,13, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage,
<br /> Month, Inspired,by his tours throughout Latin America, including Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia,
<br /> the album spans,a wide range of musical styles from rock to reggae, funk to folk and a host of Latin
<br /> influences. His 2012 release, Qh
<br /> aggLa m!gr, a collection of original, bilingual songs,won: a Parents'
<br /> Choice Gold Award.,
<br /> We believe Mister G:s Vamos a la Playa" show will be a great fit for our school with our large Latino,
<br /> community and our extensive study of the Spanish language and Latin American! culture.We plan to
<br /> host Mr, G for two shows at$1,700. Please find attached Mister G's press kit with further information
<br /> about his performances.
