Justin Blanchard, 19,
was enrolled into the youth program at the Alamance County Building
Futures youth center in August of 2012. Justin was basic skills defi-
cient in reading and had never had a job. Justin enrolled into the
Computer Integrated Machining Program at Alamance Community
College for fall 2012 semester. During his first year in college, Justin
took a remedial English class, as well as worked individually on the
Keytrain tutorials to help improve his reading skills. Justin was able to
earn a Silver Career Readiness Certificate and earn a 12.4 on his
TABE post test, overcoming his reading skills deficiency. With the
help of WIAIWIOA services, Justin earned his CNC Machining certifi-
cate in July 2014 from Alamance Community College. Justin and his
case manager worked on interviewing skills and resume development
to aid Justin in his job search. In the summer of 2015, Justin was hired by Honda in Burling-
ton to work full-time as a CNC Machinist.
•TRANSLATING INTO SUCCESS...Cesar Guevara Hernandez is a Youth Program par-
ticipant through Alamance Building Futures and currently attends Alamance Community Col-
lege towards his Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. The WIAIWIOA pro-
gram helps provide assistance towards his educational retraining. Cesar has received various
services including a Summer Work Experience at the Burlington Goodwill, in their Community
Resource Center where he served as their receptionist, translator, and resource room assis-
tant. While performing his duties at the center he helped visitors access resume assistance,
applications, and other employment based needs. Cesar was able to provide purpose to the
Hispanic population in particular, as he was able to understand
culture, needs, and help overcome language barriers experienced
by staff team members. Cesar completed his Summer Work Expe-
rience with high evaluations and professional references he may
use for future application. Cesar was the first Alamance Youth
participant to receive a Gold Level Career Readiness Credential.
He continues to challenge himself academically and professional-
ly.
