4 <br /> 1 Proclamation <br /> 2 Older Americans Month – May 2016 <br /> 3 Theme - "Blaze a Trail" <br /> 4 <br /> 5 Whereas, Orange County includes over 25,000 persons aged 60 and older; and <br /> 6 <br /> 7 Whereas, Orange County includes a community of older adults who deserve recognition for <br /> 8 their contributions to our nation; and <br /> 9 <br /> 10 Whereas, Orange County recognizes that older adults are trailblazers—advocating for <br /> 11 themselves, their peers, and their communities – paving the way for future generations; and <br /> 12 <br /> 13 Whereas, Orange County is committed to raising awareness about issues facing older adults <br /> 14 and helping all individuals to thrive in communities of their choice for as long as possible; and <br /> 15 <br /> 16 Whereas, we appreciate the value of inclusion and support in helping older adults successfully <br /> 17 contribute to and benefit from their communities; and <br /> 18 <br /> 19 Whereas, our community can provide opportunities to enrich the lives of individuals of all ages <br /> 20 by: <br /> 21 • Promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and social involvement. <br /> 22 • Emphasizing home- and community-based services that support independent living. <br /> 23 • Ensuring community members can benefit from the contributions and experience <br /> 24 of older adults. <br /> 25 <br /> 26 Now, Therefore, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim May <br /> 27 2016 to be Older Americans Month, and urge every resident to take time this month to <br /> 28 acknowledge older adults, and the people who serve them, as powerful and vital individuals <br /> 29 who greatly contribute to our community. <br /> 30 <br /> 31 This, the 5th day of May 2016. <br /> 32 <br /> 33 A motion was made by Commissioner Jacobs, seconded by Commissioner Rich for the <br /> 34 Board to approve the proclamation designating May as Older Americans Month and authorized <br /> 35 the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> 36 <br /> 37 VOTE: 6-0 (Commissioner Pelissier absent) <br /> 38 <br /> 39 <br /> 40 b. Resolution Calling for the General Assembly To Fully Fund North Carolina Public <br /> 41 Schools <br /> 42 The Board considered approving a Resolution Calling for the General Assembly To Fully <br /> 43 Fund North Carolina Public Schools, and authorizing the Chair to sign. <br /> 44 Chair McKee said Commissioner Rich brought forth this resolution due to cut backs on <br /> 45 the part of the General Assembly, which are impinging on the County's ability to provide for all <br /> 46 residents. <br /> 47 <br /> 48 PUBLIC COMMENT: <br /> 49 Allison Mahaney said since leaving her job as a teacher a few years ago, she has <br /> 50 learned about the issues that are facing the schools, and she thanked the BOCC for bringing <br />
