Our mission,to advance democratic ideals by helping area residents exercise their free speech
rights using creative electronic media, has evolved to encompass the provision of affordable videography
and video editing classes; access to state of the art video equipment and editing software;coverage of
community events; and public access broadcasting opportunities.
Current Programs and Services:
The Peoples Channel currently serves over two hundred active members, reaches approximately 110,000
households within the Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Durham communities.
We produce promotional and/or educational videos for myriad local non-profit and government
organizations.
We offer classes in video shooting, lighting, and editing(through youth summer camps and individual
tutorials), and provide all of the necessary hardware and software.
Proposed Uses of Grant Funds:
The proposal we now submit to the Orange County Arts Commission will help extend video education,
civic documentation, and public broadcasting to underserved young adults. In short, we want to
encourage interested high school students to transform from passive consumers of media into active and
adept producers of it. Partnering with the Street Scene Teen Center and the Second Family Foundation,
The Peoples Channel's staff will implement a new youth volunteer program aimed at providing
videography training for up to twenty-four young adults within the 2016 calendar year We will guide
them through the process of filming and editing an assortment of local festivals, performances, lectures,
and panel discussions--which we will then broadcast on our Chapel Hill,Carrboro, and Durham stations.
Upon completion of their own individual project, each volunteer will possess the skills(and have free and
ready access to the necessary equipment)to start creating their own narrative or documentary films. In
terms of anticipated outcomes, we hope the program will immediately increase the number of youth we
serve while expanding the number of local events we make available to our community. In addition,we
recognize that positive volunteer opportunities may well inspire and equip our youth as they pursue
professional and creative opportunities in the years to come.
