Phillips is a <br /> neighborhood school, with many students from the surrounding homes walking or riding <br /> bikes to school. The enrollment at Phillips is 642 children, serving 6th to 8th grade <br /> students. The school offers the core curriculum classes with students in each grade <br /> having two electives per semester. A sample of these electives includes foreign <br /> languages such as Spanish, French and Latin; Exploring Life Skills; Exploring Family <br /> and Consumer Sciences; Video Production; Ceramics and Sculpture; Visual Arts; Band <br /> and Orchestra. The school also offers programs in Exceptional Education, Gifted <br /> Education and English as a Second Language. <br /> Phillips has a diverse racial composition: White (49%), Asian (20%), Black (11%), <br /> Hispanic (11%), Multi-Racial (8%) and American Indian/Alaskan Native (<1%) <br /> School Arts Programs <br /> The PTSA Cultural Enrichment Committee promotes the cultural arts in education by <br /> bringing a variety of professional artists to perform at our school. During the 2014-2015 <br /> school year, the students enjoyed the following performances: <br /> North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble, 6th, 71h and 8th graders. One of the leading <br /> youth tap ensembles in the world, NCYTE shared their unique mix of cutting edge <br /> contemporary choreography and traditional rhythm tap. These young dancers from <br /> North Carolina (one of whom attended Phillips as a middle-schooler!) performed a non- <br /> stop percussive dance review peppered with stories, history and facts about the forms <br /> they presented. The performance included pieces ranging historically and <br /> geographically from traditional rhythm tap, South African Gumboot, French Canadian <br /> Waltz Clog and Irish Step Dance. This trio of female musicians collaborates with <br /> others, while aiming to ignite social change through live performance. This Chapel Hill-based musician used a blend of original <br /> and traditional American folk, bluegrass and Celtic music to highlight the mandolin, <br /> guitar, mandola and harmonica. His charismatic and engaging show illustrated how <br /> bluegrass was influenced by music that came to the U.S. from other parts of the world. <br /> www.charlespettee.com <br />
