Together, they have
produced more than a dozen Story Quilts. Wilde writes a story collaboratively with
participants and Gignoux responded artistically with the same participants. In Story Quilt
projects they twine two teaching artist residencies, extending the learning by connecting
two art forms and increasing the depth of the experience for everyone involved. In 2007,
Tell Me a Patch, a story quilt developed with patrons of Hemphill Public Library in
Greensboro was transformed into a book and the artists saw this even more
extraordinary arts experience, one that reached a wider audience.
In 2010, Wilde and Gignoux were commissioned by the North Carolina Department of
Instruction and North Carolina Art Museum to unite eight teams of teenagers across the
state. These teens composed a story involving eight charter traits, resulting in the book
What Can A Small Bird Be, a book that was given to every elementary and middle
school library in the state of North Carolina. The book was picked up by districts who
wanted more copies and it went into a second printing.
In 2015, Wilde learned of another book project. Artists from the Frank Gallery in Chapel
Hill, N.C. had been working with Karen refugee teens who had spent a year and a half
drawing, painting and photographing at Transplanting Traditions, five acres of land
where 30 Karen families farm. Wilde worked with photographer Dennis Szerszen and
book designer Steve Godwin to realize the Karen Youth Art Projects' goal of completing
a picture book. It is currently in the final phases of production.
During this project Wilde's work with Godwin began to inspire the possibility of a picture
book residency that included three art forms—writing, illustrating and book design. The
PORCH project will be the first result of the collaboration between Gignoux, Godwin and
Wilde.
Susie Wilde-Artist Project Narrative-3
