The third phase will occur when funding is
achieved to turn the print-ready pages they produce into a book.
During the writing phase of the project, Susie Wilde will work with a core group of
underserved 3-5t graders who are diverse in age, gender and backgrounds. These
same children will be the core group that illustrates and designs the book, but the other
phases will also include younger children. The plan is to involve all the children of
Rogers Road Community Center.
Community Impact:
In terms of the book's creation, this project's initial phases are focused not on how many
people it reaches, but in the depth of the experience for the selected core group of
students. This core group of underserved students often goes unheard and typically
have difficult in expressing themselves in writing. In this project, they will work
collaboratively to develop writing and art that first matters to them and will later matter to
a wider readership.
Having a small number of core students makes for ease in terms of collaboration and
collaboration will free these students who often struggle with getting their words down
on paper. Much of their routinized test-driven school writing is neither engaging, nor
thoughtful and must be completed quickly. Being involved in a long-term project
students' will be experiencing the deep thought and careful expression crucial to writing
a book that matters. The students will be treated as professional writers and illustrators
and the authenticity of each phase of the project will aid them in discovering and
expressing their talents and feeling pride in a genuine creative endeavor.
This project is focused on both process and product. Each student will have a copy of
the completed book, but there will also be copies donated to every school where
PORCH serves children and families. In addition, PORCH will be using this book to
reach other communities that can benefit from the model they have developed. .
PORCH's mission to connect diverse neighborhoods will encourage distribution and the
writing and illustrating of the core group of children will affect many people than just the
creators and their community.
Artist Experience:
Susie Wilde has been working in North Carolina classrooms for over 25 years and has
composed hundreds of stories with children and families. Through those years she has
honed a process composed of learning activities that take writers from a character idea
to a completed story.
Susie Wilde-Artist Project Narrative-2
