DocuSign Envelope ID:883AB84D-78B1-4D41-BOEF-BE6A942205E0
Susie Wilde's Artist Project Narrative
Proposed Project:
This grant is being written to receive partial funding for the first phase of a three-artist
residency that will ultimately result in a book for PORCH (People Offering Relief for
Chapel Hill-Carrboro Homes). The entire residency will allow a core group of children
from Rogers Road Community School to author, illustrate and design this book with the
help of three professional teaching artists who will guide them through an authentic
process of picture book creation. This grant application seeks funding for the first phase
of the project, a writing residency with Susie Wilde.
PORCH is an all-volunteer, grassroots hunger relief organization whose mission is to
collect and distribute food for families facing hunger in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro
community, It is an organization that has, in five years, grown to unite 150
neighborhoods in providing food for 300 low-income families. When PORCH contacted
Susie Wilde about creating a picture book that would reach a broader audience, she
suggested having children write the book.
One of PORCH's strengths is in finding partners and Susan Romaine, founder and
director, reached out to Rogers Road Community Center. David Caldwell, the director,
was seeking quality educational programming to supplement the afternoon tutoring that
occurs at the center from Monday to Thursday. On November 18, 2015, Romaine and
Susie Wilde met with Rogers Road Community Center board members who
enthusiastically received the idea and wanted to begin immediately.
This initial writing residency will occur in 10-12 visits. Wilde will lead the children in
imagining characters that reflect the theme PORCH wishes to represent the
connection of community. During the first session, students will respond to a prompt
and brainstorm a number of potential characters. These will be narrowed down to a
selection of finalists, chosen for their potential in representing PORCH's vision and
inspiring the story's text and illustration of the story. The students will select the final
character and develop that character and a plot through a series of learning games that
stress higher order thinking. Once the plot is conceived, students will focus on
descriptive language that will make their story sing. The residency will include having
students go through a series of drafts, viewing the work's improvement until they are
satisfied; often students create as many as 12 drafts.
After the book's text is developed, it will be reviewed by PORCH and the other teaching
artists, textile artist Peg Gignoux and book designer, Steve Godwin. They will take the
Susie Wilde-Artist Project Narrative-1
