But there are warm greenhouses where they plant and water seeds
that shoot up in light-green sprouts. The sprouts grow bigger in size and darker in color until
they are ready to plant in the ground.
Winter is a time for hoop houses
The farmers work together to build hoop houses for tender plants. They cover the aluminum
poles, rounded like ribs, with plastic. This plastic will hold in moisture and protect warm-
weather plants like tomatoes from cold temperatures, heavy rains and hungry birds.
Spring:
Spring is a time for bamboo and building
In Burma and Thailand, bamboo was important to farmers. Luckily, it grows in North Carolina as
well. Green, flexible bamboo makes sturdy seats and small shelters that will cool the farmers in
the hot summer months ahead.Sundried bamboo is light-weight and easy to cut. It provides a
place for beans, squash and water gourds to climb.
Spring is a busy time
Farmers break up clumps of soil with the batu and mix it with chicken poop until it is dark and
rich. They water the sprouting seeds, but the fastest growing plants are weeds. The farmers
spend many hours tugging and yanking weeds so carrots and daikon radishes have plenty of
room. The farmers work in the gardens rio matter how rainy it is, or how muddy their boots
get. The gardens must be tended every day and boots can always be cleaned and dried.
Spring is a time for bees, butterflies, and flowers
Farmers are not the only ones working. Bees and butterflies fly from place to place collecting
pollen from brightly-colored blossoms and carrying it to others, helping yarrow,
chrysanthemum, and mustard flowers grow.
Spring is a time for hens
Transplanting Traditions-Final Draft-2
