The internal lighting system, consisting of a hundred individual lamps, each
was connected to a single key of a massive keyboard and"played"to sounds of music, pulsating up and down the entire
length of the store's marquee. A take-off of this idea could be used to create an exciting interactive work in one of the
businesses downtown Chapel Hill,
2.Aeolus
Site-specific environmental public art installation—Mills Gallery,Boston Center for the Arts
•Completion Date:Summer 1986
•Media:PVC pipe,cable,knit fabric,wood,fan,and internal lighting system
•Location:Mills Gallery,Boston Center for the Arts Plaza,Boston,MA
•Dimensions: 12 ft(H)x 9 ft(W)x 25 ft(L)
This specific artwork was installed in completion of a promise made during an art installation on the Island of Syros,
Greece in which the winds were abated. In conjunction with the gallery exhibition of Layne's drawings'and paintings
and a simultaneous indoor installation and performance piece titled Homage to Poseidon, this archway installation met
the stringent demands required of affixing an artwork to an historic building. Making the installation their-own,local
high school students used this arching environment as a meeting place and individually protected the artwork from
street vandalism.
3.Dotted Line
Site-specific environmental public art installation--An Artsplosure event
•Completion Date:Spring 1990
•Media:PVC pipe,rope,knit fabric,metal stakes,concrete footings,and internal lighting system
•Location:Moore Square,Raleigh,NC•Artsplosure Spring Art and Jazz Festival
•Dimensions:Fountain section:25 ft(H)x 37 ft(W)x 31.5 ft(L),Tree section:20 ft(H)x 27 ft(W)x 36 ft(L)
Each suspended from a single nylon rope attached at one end to a railing of an second story walkway structure or a tree
limb across the street and the other end attached to the ground, sixteen individual internally illuminated fabric discs
danced in the wind to the surrounding music and the nearby splashing of the fountain. Festival attendees could activate
the pods by playing the rope chords and watching the interaction of one disc upon another.
MICHAEL ROY LAYNE•LEGACYWORKS•2015-16 Far Artist Project Grant Appticalion•Artwork 8araple List•November 30.2015 Page 1
