Typically,the volunteer works with a <br /> student in a one-on-one setting on a written piece that he/she is editing. <br /> • Helped develop and launch this as a pilot program at Frank Porter Graham Elementary <br /> • My session with a student was filmed and is included in the instructional video used to train new <br /> Coach Write! volunteers <br /> Blue Ribbon Mentor Advocate(ERMA) 2008-Present <br /> The BRMA program pairs mentors with minority students who show promise,generally starting when the <br /> student is in fourth grade. <br /> • Trained as a BRMA volunteer in 2008 <br /> • Paired with an African-American mentee in the Fall of her fifth grade year and continue as a <br /> mentee for that student who is now a Senior at Carrboro High School <br /> READ2ME:Tailgate Stories 2008-Present <br /> An outreach program aimed to keep low income students,the majority of whom are minorities,reading <br /> through the summer <br /> • With Mary Andrews, initiated this program in one Scroggs neighborhood the first year <br /> • This program has now expanded into a district-wide summer program involving all CHCCS district <br /> elementary schools at 25 different sites <br /> • Successfully written numerous grants annually to fund books for this initiative <br /> Family Reading Partners 2010-Present <br /> A program that brings families together around books and encourages reading to at-risk children, We <br /> model for parents how to read with their children and have good conversations around quality books. The <br /> books are then given to the families to take home for their personal libraries. <br /> • Developed with M. Andrews and have conducted numerous sessions at multiple district elementary <br /> schools <br /> • Program expanded to adolescent parents in all Orange County's high schools <br /> • Help select quality literature and write conversation cards for the program. <br /> • Successfully written multiple grants to obtain funding for the books as well as the meals for this <br /> program <br /> • This program is now expanding into CHCCS Pre-k programs,the Orange County Literacy Council, <br /> and Orange County Social Services <br /> • Received MothereadlFatheread training in 2012 <br /> Guided Reading Bookrooms(GRBs) 1997-Present <br /> Guided Reading Bookrooms in elementary schools are a cost effective way to offer large numbers of sets of <br /> books in a range of reading levels and topics to be used for guided reading in all grades/classes within a <br /> school <br /> • Instrumental in starting three GRBs(MeDougle Elementary,Frank Porter Graham Elementary,and <br /> Northside Elementary) <br /> • Responsible for ordering,processing,and cataloguing new books <br /> • Obtained numerous grants for new books that have been added to the schools' collections <br />
