will be used for siting park facilities and for identifying areas of historic and cultural interest for
interpretation.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: Orange County and/or other Hollow Rock project partners have received
a grant of up to $9,000, or 60% of the project cost ($9,999). This would require a local match of
40%, or up to $6,000. Durham County and Orange County, as the landowners of the property,
would split this match with each contributing up to $3,000. Funds for the Orange County match
of $3,000 would come from existing, previously appropriated funds. The Town of Chapel Hill
and City of Durham will also be asked for funding assistance, which would be credited back to
Durham and Orange counties.
The project includes a Phase 1 Cultural Resources Survey (conducted by Legacy Research for
approximately $9,999), more intensive archaeological investigations which staff anticipates will
be warranted and the preparation of educational or interpretive materials such as signage,
outdoor displays or informational maps that will enhance the public's experience visiting the
Hollow Rock site.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the selection of
Legacy Research Associates, Inc. and authorize the Chair to sign the contract prepared by the
state granting authority on behalf of the Board, subject to final review by staff and the County
Attorney.
