ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: September 6, 2007 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. --- <br />SUBJECT: Contract Between CHCCS, OCS, and Health Department for School Nurses <br />DEPARTMENT: Health <br />PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Contracts <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Rosemary Summers, 245-2411 <br />PURPOSE: To approve the contracts between CHCCS, OCS and the Health Department for <br />School Nurse Funding. <br />BACKGROUND: During the budget deliberations in FY 2001-2002, the Board of <br />Commissioners agreed to a four-year plan for achieving a goal of a full-time school nurse in <br />every public school in both Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) and Orange County <br />Schools (OCS). The table below depicts the implementation of the four-year plan as it was <br />authorized on an annual basis: <br /> 2001-02 02-03 03-04 04-05 05-06 06-07 forward <br />CHCCS 2 0 2+ 2 new 4 +1 new 5+ 1 new 6 <br />OCS 1 0 1 +1 new 2 +1 new 3 3 <br />New nurses were added in October of each of the years that they were authorized. Fiscal Year <br />2006-2007 was the first continuation year of the school nurse plan and this year is unchanged. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The total cost of the contracts is $566,774 and was authorized in the <br />approved budget for FY2007-2008. The Orange County Schools will receive a total of $183,849 <br />for three nurses and the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools will receive a total of $382,925 for six <br />nurses. It is anticipated that the full cost in fiscal year 07-08 will be $566,774 depending on <br />confirmation of the state salary scale for school nurses. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the contracts <br />and authorize the Chair to sign.
