ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: September 6, 2007 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. 3 -Q <br />SUBJECT: Resolution Recognizing North Carolina House Speaker Joe Hackney <br />DEPARTMENT: BOCC PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Resolution Commissioner Moses Carey, Jr. <br />Donna Baker, Clerk to the <br />Orange County Board of <br />Commissioners (919) 245-2130 <br />PURPOSE: To consider a resolution recognizing Joe Hackney, North Carolina Speaker of the <br />House, for his positive legislative work which has been acknowledged at a national level. <br />BACKGROUND: The National Conference of State Legislatures and the State Legislative <br />Leadership Foundation selected Joe Hackney for the 2007 Excellence in State Legislative <br />Leadership Award. An independent, non-partisan selection committee representing the two <br />organizations as well as journalists, former legislators and scholars selected Hackney for the <br />award. <br />On January 24, 2007, Joe Hackney was elected North Carolina Speaker of the House. His <br />service as Speaker follows a time of turmoil, and Speaker Hackney has been credited with <br />restoring integrity to the chamber. The resolution acknowledges his impact locally as well as his <br />national recognition. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the attached <br />resolution recognizing North Carolina Speaker of the House Joe Hackney and authorize the <br />Chair to sign on behalf of the Board of Commissioners.
