1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: March 22, 2016 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 4-a (Proposed) <br /> SUBJECT: Orange County Resolution in Support of the City of Charlotte Non-Discrimination <br /> Policy <br /> DEPARTMENT: BOCC <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> - Resolution Donna Baker, Clerk to the Orange <br /> County Board of Commissioners, 919- <br /> 245-2130 <br /> PURPOSE: To consider a resolution in support of the City of Charlotte's non-discrimination <br /> policy. <br /> BACKGROUND: On February 21, 2016 the Charlotte City Council approved amendments to <br /> the city's Non-Discrimination Ordinance. The City Council added marital and familial status, <br /> sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity to the list of protected characteristics. <br /> Orange County supports the right of local governments to articulate their own community values <br /> of inclusion without interference or suppression by the General Assembly. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goals are applicable <br /> to this agenda item: <br /> •. GOAL: FOSTER A COMMUNITY CULTURE THAT REJECTS OPPRESSION AND <br /> INEQUITY <br /> The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race or color; <br /> religious or philosophical beliefs; sex, gender or sexual orientation; national origin or <br /> ethnic background; age; military service; disability; and familial, residential or economic <br /> status. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board consider approving the <br /> attached resolution in support of the City of Charlotte's non-discrimination policy, authorize the <br /> Chair to sign on behalf of the Board, and direct the Clerk to the Board to send copies to the City <br /> of Charlotte, Orange County's legislative delegation and to the North Carolina General <br /> Assembly. <br />
