11 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> NORTH CAROLINA Orange County, North Carolina <br /> • Residents of Hillsborough had the lowest median monthly housing <br /> costs among the three jurisdictions for owner-occupied units, <br /> paying $1,383. Carrboro had the highest monthly housing cost for <br /> homeowners of the three jurisdictions at $1,873 per month. Chapel <br /> Hill has monthly housing costs of$1,673 per month. <br /> • The median monthly rent in Orange County increased by <br /> 22.81% between 2000 anti 1011_ frnm R6R4 to $840_ <br /> respectively. The median monthly housing cost for Chapel Hill in <br /> 2011 was $1,095; the median monthly housing cost for Carrboro <br /> was $885; the median monthly housing cost for Hillsborough was <br /> $964. While rents in the past were relatively more affordable in <br /> Hillsborough the trend is much higher increases in rent. <br /> • The monthly housing costs for 48.2% of all renter-occupied <br /> households in Orange County exceeded 30% of monthly <br /> income in 2000, indicating an even higher percentage of <br /> renters whose housing is not considered affordable. In 2011, <br /> that amount increased to 53.8%, which is a 5.6% increase from <br /> 2000. <br /> • According to the 2007-2011 American Community Survey (ACS) <br /> data, there were 50,837 households in 2011 in Orange County. <br /> Based on this data, 14,494 (28.5%) of all households were single <br /> person households living alone. <br /> Cost Burdened <br /> A central housing problem facing many households in Orange <br /> County is a lack of affordable housing and many of the County's <br /> lower income households are paying more than 30% (cost <br /> burdened) to more than 50% (severely cost burdened) of their total <br /> household income on the monthly cost for housing. <br /> According to the 2007-2011 ACS data, 44.1% of all renter <br /> households are cost burdened by 30% or more, and 12.1% of all <br /> owner households are cost burdened by 30% or more. In addition, <br /> 28.4% of all renter households are cost burdened by 50% or more, <br /> and 7.7% of all owner households are cost burdened by 50% or <br /> more.
