It is a designated Engineering is Elementary(EiE) school.
EiE has created a research-based, standards-driven, and classroom-tested curriculum that
integrates engineering and technology concepts and skills with elementary science topics. EiE
lessons not only promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning in
grades 1-5, but also connect with literacy and social studies. New Hope Elementary is a Title 1,
preK-5, school located just north of Chapel Hill. The school has approximately 639 students, 54
certified staff, and 61% of students are on free/reduced lunch, It also has the largest ESL
population in the district. Efland-Cheeks Elementary is a Title 1, preK-5, school located in Efland
with approximately 458 students, 47 certified staff and 66% of students on free/reduced lunch.
Partnership Academy provides an alternative academic program for students in the high schools
of Orange County Schools. In addition to offering the standard academic programs, Partnership
Academy offers enrichment activities to enhance core academics and to facilitate students'
character development and personal growth. There are approximately 30 students at Partnership
Academy this year, and 64% receive free/reduced lunch.
SCHOOL ARTS PROGRAMS
Central Elementary, New Hope Elementary and Efland-Cheeks Elementary each have Art and
Music as part of their special area classes, which students visit once per week. Partnership
Academy does not have any art programs.
PROPOSED USE OF GRANT FUNDS
From January through April 2016, professional teaching artists will go into all preK-5 classrooms
at Central Elementary, New Hope Elementary, and Efland-Cheeks Elementary to work with
students to teach them specific curriculum concepts (often times multiple concepts spanning
different subject areas) through a desired art form (17 total residencies this school year). In
addition, students at Partnership Academy, the alternative high school, will also have the
opportunity work with a professional teaching artist on curriculum concepts and character
education concepts specifically geared towards high school students.
Through a partnership with The ArtsCenter, a non-profit in Carrboro, this program has been
implemented at all three elementary schools and the alternative high school since 2013 and
provides underserved students opportunities to engage in curricular education through the arts,
which they often would not experience outside of school. Through this program, students are
exposed to an alternative method of instruction, which really caters to students across the
spectrum who have varied learning styles. All students at Central Elementary, New Hope
Elementary and Efland-Cheeks Elementary will participate in Arts-Based Learning Experiences
(ABLE) residencies, which are five-day residencies designed around a School Show students
see at The ArtsCenter. Teaching artists go into classrooms for four sessions prior to students
seeing the show(chosen by teachers), and then one session following the show for wrap-up
and reflection. On the final day of the residency, the classroom teacher co-teaches alongside
the teaching artist and parents/families are often times invited into the classroom to be a part of
the experience. Prior to this, classroom teachers and teaching artists meet to collaborate and
plan for the residency, and they meet again once the residency is over to evaluate the
experience. In addition, grade levels often times incorporate the material from the residency into
parent nights, family sharing events or even district-wide events.
