ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: August 21, 2007 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~ ' ~. <br />SUBJECT: Youth Voices Summer Leadership Training Institute <br />DEPARTMENT: Cooperative Extension PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Graduation Program and Additional <br />Materials (Under Separate Cover) <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Iris Fuller, 245-2057 <br />Dr. Fletcher Barber, Jr., 245-2051 <br />PURPOSE: To provide the Board of Commissioners with an update on the Fifth Annual Youth <br />Voices Summer Leadership Training Institute. <br />BACKGROUND: In July 2007, Orange County conducted its fifth annual Summer Leadership <br />Training Institute for area youth. This program, administered by Cooperative Extension, is a <br />collaborative effort between the County Manager's Office, Cooperative Extension and Triangle <br />United Way. For the past five years, approximately 15 students have spent six weeks of their <br />summer vacation in a program that provides them with an opportunity to: <br />a) Build leadership; <br />b) Demonstrate community service; <br />c) Collaborate with community and government services; and <br />d) Enhance the beautification of the Orange County Community <br />One graduate from the program, Ruth Mayo, and Project Coordinator Khalia Jones will present <br />a report and answer questions at the meeting. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with receiving the update. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the update for <br />informational purposes. <br />
