The only residency requirement in Durham
County is for the manager. Mike said that he has in the past asked department heads to move to
Durham County, and most have been willing. He also said that if a candidate for the job didn't
want to move, but otherwise was a good fit for the county, he would not make the person move.
Mike feels that requiring residency can limit the county's ability to recruit top candidates.
Hope that helps!
-Laura
Laura Jensen
Intern
Durham County Manager's Office
200 E. A small number do live outside the county, but there
has never been an issue because of that.
