Chief Inspector and Plans Examiner <br />Page 2 <br />• Performs other related duties as assigned. <br />KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: <br />• Ability to review residential, commercial and industrial plans to ensure compliance with N.C. State <br />Building codes. <br />• Knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical, building, mechanical, and plumbing trades. <br />• Knowledge of county zoning regulations and building codes. <br />• Knowledge of relevant state laws and regulations. <br />• Skill in reviewing and interpreting plans, technical specifications and reports. <br />• Sltill in operating testing instruments, meters, computers and calculators. <br />• Sltill in organizing inspections work and interpreting the State Building Codes. <br />• Skill in interpersonal relations and supervision. <br />• Slcill in oral and written communication. <br />SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Building Services Manager assigns work in terms of general <br />instructions. Completed work is spot-checked for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety <br />of the final results. <br />GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the North Carolina State Building Code and the N.C. General Statutes. <br />These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application. <br />COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related plans examination work. The variety and volume of plans to <br />be reviewed and the new residential plan review requirement contributes to the complexity of the work. <br />SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to conduct plans examination work to ensure <br />compliance with North Carolina State Building Codes. Successful performance helps ensure the <br />enforcement of building codes in the county. <br />PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, inspectors, <br />contractors, realtors, engineers, developers, zoning officials, insurance adjustors, architects, home business <br />owners, government agency personnel, and the general public. <br />PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information, provide services, resolve <br />problems and negotiate or settle matters. <br />PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, <br />crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools <br />requiring a high degree of dexterity and must distinguish between shades of color. <br />WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee is <br />exposed to noise, dust, dirt and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective <br />devices. <br />
