Building Services Director <br />Page 2 <br />~~, <br />o Notifies contractors, engineers, architects, subcontractors, and property owners of code violations <br />and discusses remedies for deficiencies; consults with other agencies as necessary: <br />o Drafts new and revised ordinances concerning building construction and zoning issues. <br />o Interprets and explains codes and regulations as needed. <br />o Performs other related duties as assigned. <br />KNOWLEDGE REQUIl2.ED BY THE POSITION: <br />o Knowledge of county and town of Hillsborough zoning regulations and building codes, as well <br />as fire codes and related codes and ordinances. <br />o Knowledge of relevant state laws and regulations. <br />o Sltill in reviewing and interpreting plans, technical specifications, and reports. <br />o Slcill in planning and organizing work. <br />o Skill in operating testing instruments and meters, a computer, and calculator. <br />o Skill in management, supervision and leadership. <br />o Slcill in oral and written communication, including customer service and dealing with complaints <br />and concerns. <br />SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Planning Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions <br />requiring the use of judgment. Completed work is spot-checked for the nature and propriety of the final <br />results. <br />GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the North Carolina State Building Code and Orange County Zoning <br />Ordinance. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. <br />COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied technical and supervisory duties relating to code inspection <br />and enforcement. The number and variety of codes to be interpreted and enforced and the volume of <br />inspections performed contribute to the complexity of the work. <br />SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to oversee code inspections. Successful <br />performance helps ensure the enforcement of zoning and development codes in the county. <br />PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, contractors, <br />engineers, developers, zoning officials, insurance adjustors, architects, home/business owners, <br />manufacturers' representatives, government agency personnel, and the general public. <br />PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information, provide services, resolve <br />problems, and negotiate or settle matters. <br />
