1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: February 16, 2016 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 4-c <br /> SUBJECT: Resolution Recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day <br /> DEPARTMENT: County Commissioners PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Resolution Commissioner Renee Price, 245-2130 <br /> Commissioner Penny Rich, 245-2130 <br /> PURPOSE: To consider a resolution recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous <br /> Peoples' Day in Orange County. <br /> BACKGROUND: Commissioners Renee Price and Penny Rich have worked over past months <br /> with many residents to develop a proposed resolution recognizing the second Monday in <br /> October as Indigenous Peoples' Day in Orange County. <br /> The towns of Hillsborough, Carrboro and Chapel Hill have previously adopted resolutions <br /> designating the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples' Day. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this item. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goal is applicable to <br /> this agenda item: <br /> • GOAL: FOSTER A COMMUNITY CULTURE THAT REJECTS OPPRESSION AND <br /> INEQUITY <br /> The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race or color; <br /> religious or philosophical beliefs; sex, gender or sexual orientation; national origin or <br /> ethnic background; age; military service; disability; and familial, residential or economic <br /> status. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board consider approving the <br /> resolution recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples' Day in Orange <br /> County and, if approved, authorize the Chair to sign the resolution. <br />
