TRIANGLE
AY PHOTOGRAPHY
Inspired by the Lens , FESTIVAL
These photographs, specifically chosen for the Click Triangle Photo Festival's Engaged with Light exhibition, are
part of an award-winning project commissioned through the Town of Chapel Hill Office of Public and Cultural Arts
to develop a site-specific permanent art installation for the Homestead Aquatic Center. "Rockin'the Spectrum"is a
series of large-scale,semi-abstract portraits of children and teenagers from the Adaptive Recreation and Inclusion
Swim classes.
The project title references the spectrum of developmental disorders associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as
well as the spectrum of colors an artist might use in rendering a portrait. These single-image non-composited
abstracted images are photographs of the students as they learn confidence and independence in the water. The
project blends fine art and humanitarian work, which is central to my art practice.I view the entire project as
animating, enhancing, or embracing the inherent beauty and complexity of both of these spectrums.
Through partnerships with the Autism Society of North Carolina Orange/Chatham County Division, the North
Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities,The Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities, and the
Adapted Recreation&Inclusion Program of the Town of Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill Public and Cultural Arts, the
Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Orange County Arts Commission, and the FRANK Gallery Community
Outreach Program,we will host educational forums to encourage understanding and respect for people with ASD and
the importance of inclusive programs for youth with disabilities. With generous donations and grant support,we will
continue to exhibit artwork from this project at university research centers, fine art galleries, government agencies,
educational venues, living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchen refrigerators.A percentage of the artist's commission from
the sale of these works is donated to support programs and research that serve children with ASD.
Rockin the Spectrum is the fifth in a series of programs in a community arts engagement project entitled Into the
Streets, an annual commission administered by Jeffrey York and sponsored by the Town of Chapel Hill's Public and
Cultural Arts Office and the Public Arts Commission, founded with the intention of placing artists where they can
foster connections between people from inside and outside their identified communities.
EXPLORE
CHAPEL HILL I II CARRBORO OWN
CHAPEL HILL
pAt RIB Tu RiLLbeoHOUrH L
A no ORANGE COUNTY ARTS hi), 0,
.._ ; COMMISSION { PEG
