The FRANK is so much more than simply a
gallery representing a wide variety of local artists. It takes the educational outreach portion of
its mission very seriously and, with passionate artists and limited resources, has helped to craft
some extraordinary collaborations within our community. As a musician, I have been included in a
few of these fantastic events.
During its Diversabilites forum this past April, I had the great privilege of performing with a
high-functioning autistic young man at one of the gallery's presentations - he played guitar and
sang some original music as well as a couple of cover tunes, and I accompanied him on piano. What
he lacked in technical ability he more than made up for with his profound joy for music, which
inspired everyone in the room.
In 2012 my quartet performed in conjunction with two different events produced by FRANK. In
October we accompanied an outdoor public photographic slide show in improvised fashion. In
December, as part of the gallery's Sound and Image Collaboration, our roving performance in the
gallery was inspired by the exhibits. Local film producer Nic Beery joined us in the gallery and
offered his perspective of our performance with live-stream video. Both events were
enthusiastically received.
In April 2012, as part of FRANK's spring workshop series, I held an introductory improvisational
music-making gathering, giving folks an opportunity to explore their musical selves and create
music with each other in ensemble.
FRANK produces its collaborations at a very high level of execution, drawing from the vast talents
and experiences of its artists and staff. They are deeply devoted to inclusivity, reaching into
the diversity of cultures and disciplines that our community embraces, and helping us to relate
and deepen our understanding of each other. To be able to partner with FRANK in being of service
to our community as an artist is tremendously gratifying and I hope to continue to have more such
opportunities, because I have some more ideas in mind.
Thanks for your time and attention.
Alison Weiner, President
Mahalo Arts, Inc.
