Waste Diversion at Special Events and Other Waste Management Related <br /> 9 Outreach Efforts <br /> 10 Muriel Williman, Solid Waste Education and Outreach Coordinator, presented the <br /> 11 following PowerPoint slides: <br /> 12 <br /> 13 It's not "ZERO-WASTE" <br /> 14 but it is...EXTREME WASTE DIVERSION!!! <br /> 15 <br /> 16 Orange County provides varying levels of waste reduction assistance to public and <br /> 17 private special events <br /> 18 • Technical assistance (for food waste diversion, source reduction, straight-up recycling; <br /> 19 for vendors and organizers) <br /> 20 • Containers, collection, equipment and staffing for large events often where we also <br /> 21 host an information booth <br /> 22 • Loan, delivery and pick-up of recycling and/or food waste containers for events where <br /> 23 organizers agree to collect, manage and separate materials <br /> 24 • There is no charge for these services <br /> 25 <br /> 26 Waste reduction resources <br /> 27 • Recycling for all— people AND materials <br /> 28 o Well established program, universal throughout Orange County <br /> 29 o Beverage containers, non-bottle plastics such as tubs, cups and plastic bags <br /> 30 • Food waste diversion options <br /> 31 o Brooks Contractors for commercial composting, special events, and now public <br /> 32 drop-off <br /> 33 • Collaborations <br /> 34 o Public Works, Parks and Rec, Community groups <br /> 35 • Volunteer <br /> 36 <br /> 37 Care and Feeding of Volunteers <br /> 38 • Solicit through press releases, social media, government and university list-serves, high <br /> 39 school and scout groups <br /> 40 • Save contact info to cultivate experienced volunteers <br /> 41 • Send info to the group so they are well prepared <br /> 42 • Give goodies <br /> 43 • Thank you note with diversion results <br /> 44 <br /> 45 Small, Medium and Large Events <br /> 46 • How many people? Venue footprint? <br /> 47 o Volume of waste, scale of operations <br /> 48 • How will the waste be managed? <br /> 49 o What level of diversion engages the organizer? Just recycling or compost too? <br />
