Age Cohort !Projections <br />Highlights <br />• During the three decades (2000 - <br />2030), the effect of population <br />growth on educational enrollment <br />will be nominal. The school age <br />population of students ages 5 -18 <br />years old will remain steady around <br />15% of the total population between <br />these decades. <br />• Children 18 and under represent 20% <br />of the total county's population. <br />• Growth rates in teens 15 -18 will <br />decline by almost two- thirds between <br />2010 and 2030. Likewise, growth <br />rates for the very young 0 -4 will <br />drop by half. <br />• The population of young and middle <br />age adults in Orange County has <br />begun to decline, reversing previous <br />decade's trends. <br />• The overall elderly population (ages <br />65 and over) increased by 1,848 (23 <br />percent) during the decade (1990- <br />2000), going from 8,083 in 1990 to <br />9,931 by the year 2000. <br />• During the decades (2000 -2030) the <br />elderly population will be growing <br />9/6/2007 C11 <br />both in absolute numbers as well as a <br />percent of total population. In 2000, <br />the 65 and over age group <br />represented 8.6 percent of the total <br />population, but is expected to <br />increase its share to 16.8 percent by <br />the year 2030. <br />• The elderly population (65 and over) <br />will nearly triple during these three <br />decades (2000 - 2030), increasing <br />from 9,931 in 2000 to 26,499 by the <br />year 2030. The very old population <br />(85 and over) will more than double <br />during this time period, increasing <br />from 1,174 in 2000 to 2,909 in the <br />year 2030. <br />• Orange County's Median Age has <br />been steadily increasing from 25.7 in <br />1980 to 30.4 in 2000. This trend is <br />expected to continue in the future <br />with the "graying" of America. <br />
