1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: October 20, 2015 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 8-b <br /> SUBJECT: Orange County Detention Center Project Update <br /> DEPARTMENT: Asset Management Services PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Jeff Thompson, 919-245-2658 <br /> Gordon Dively, 919-245-2628 <br /> PURPOSE: To receive an update on the progress of the Detention Center and to provide <br /> feedback on the schematic design to staff and the designer. <br /> BACKGROUND: On June 2, 2015, the Board of Orange County Commissioners authorized the <br /> Manager to execute a professional services agreement with a qualified design firm selected <br /> through a Request for Qualifications ("RFQ") process over the summer break. Moseley <br /> Architects of Charlotte was selected through this process and began schematic design in <br /> August. <br /> As part of the initial design work, Moseley has collected extensive stakeholder input that will <br /> serve as a basis for the overall design and operation of the facility. Moseley representatives will <br /> join staff in presenting a project progress update that will highlight key design principles, findings <br /> from the stakeholder input process, and going forward schedule milestones. <br /> Utility and site construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2016, followed by the <br /> building construction in early 2017. The detention center is anticipated to be complete in the <br /> fall-winter of 2018. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with receiving this update. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The design, construction and operation of the Orange County <br /> Detention Center address the following social justice goal: <br /> • GOAL: CREATE A SAFE COMMUNITY <br /> The reduction of risks from vehicle/traffic accidents, childhood and senior injuries, gang <br /> activity, substance abuse and domestic violence. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends the Board receive an update on the <br /> progress of the Detention Center and provide feedback on the schematic design to staff and the <br /> designer. <br />
