23
Page 3 of 3 Matt Hughes
Orange County Board of Adjustment(REQUIRES DISCLOSURE STATEMENT)
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
In various roles I have held, I have had to be an fair and independent arbiter in determining facts
and ensuring that decisions are made reflecting those facts as well as official policies and
procedures. One body I currently sit on, the Human Relations Commission, is tasked with
hearing housing discrimination cases in a quasi-judicial manner and must adhere to federal
legislation and housing policy in determining if discrimination took place and help address the
complaint. My view is that the Board of Adjustment is no different in meeting the needs of
residents and property owners as well as the needs of Orange County and the general public as
it relates to zoning and regulations.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I have previously applied for the Orange County Planning Board and find issues relating to
zoning and planning to be incredibly important, especially with new construction and economic
development. I see the Board of Adjustment as a way to ensure that property owners are fairly
treated in balancing community needs. Those who have a vested interest in planning and zone
must be confident that this board has members who are fair and impartial.
Conflict of Interest:
No.
Supplemental Questions:
Work Experience: Non-profit work involving grassroots organizing, activism and
advocation.
Volunteer Experience: Volunteerism for political campaigns; community projects created
and implemented during my tenures as student body president and vice-president; and
currently ongoing tutoring in Orange County Schools (Cedar Ridge High School) in the
area of Civics and Economics as part of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program at
UNC-Chapel Hill. Tutoring high school and middle school students as a mentor with over
100 students and an accumulated approximately 1000 hours of giving student assistance.
Education: Ongoing first year student at the University of North Carolina, studying political
science; North Carolina Teaching Fellow. Graduate of Cedar ridge High (2009) current
student at UNC-Chapel, political science major.
Other Comments:
Current member of the Orange County Schools Raising Achievement and Closing the
Gap Committee.
