Durham Technical College Board of Directors —Appointment <br /> 4 The Board considered making an appointment to the Durham Technical Community <br /> 5 College Board of Directors. <br /> 6 Commissioner Rich said there has been some talk about the position currently held by <br /> 7 Aaron Nelson, whose term has expired. <br /> 8 <br /> 9 A motion was made by Commissioner Rich, seconded by Commissioner Pelissier to <br /> 10 defer this appointment until September allowing Durham Technical College time to provide <br /> 11 input regarding this position. <br /> 12 <br /> 13 Commissioner Price said the Durham Tech Board of Trustees allows the counties to fill <br /> 14 their own positions. She said she believed that Mr. Nelson was unaware that his term had <br /> 15 expired. She said she is willing to defer this appointment but it is not up to Durham Tech to <br /> 16 decide but rather the Board of County Commissioners should to determine what it seeks from <br /> 17 the Durham Tech Board of Trustees. <br /> 18 Commissioner Jacobs said he finds it acceptable if the Board is deferring this <br /> 19 appointment until September for clarity and to advertise but also stated that it is up to the Board <br /> 20 of County Commissioners to make the decision, not the Durham Tech Board of Trustees. <br /> 21 Commissioner Dorosin wanted to know if the current list of applicants would still be able <br /> 22 to be considered. He also asked if there are any reservations regarding the people who have <br /> 23 already applied. <br /> 24 The Clerk said yes, the people on the list are still able to be considered. <br /> 25 Commissioner Rich said her conversation with Aaron Nelson stressed the need to <br /> 26 nominate a person who is a strong advocate for Orange County's economic development. <br /> 27 Commissioner Pelissier said the Board should have some idea of who it wants to see on <br /> 28 this board and what kind of interests it wants to pursue before making this appointment. <br /> 29 Commissioner Price said if this appointment is delayed she wanted to be a part of the <br /> 30 discussion going forward since she is the BOCC representative on the Durham Tech Board. <br /> 31 She said Durham Tech has been working on a strategic plan and several of these applicants fill <br /> 32 the requirements of an appointment. She said Mr. Nelson was an asset during these sessions <br /> 33 but the BOCC should look at these applicants and how they may move Durham Tech forward. <br /> 34 Commissioner Jacobs asked if there is an executive summary of the Durham Tech <br /> 35 strategic plan that the Board can review before appointing. He said he would second <br /> 36 Commissioner Dorosin's suggestion of selecting an applicant tonight. <br /> 37 Commissioner Dorosin asked Commissioner Rich if the appointment was delayed, <br /> 38 would she want to not consider the existing list of applicants. <br /> 39 Commissioner Rich said she would certainly consider those applicants. She said she <br /> 40 made a motion for the delay as she feels uninformed regarding the current status and needs of <br /> 41 Durham Tech and would like to be better informed before making an appointment to their Board <br /> 42 of Trustees. <br /> 43 Commissioner Dorosin said he does not like the idea of advertising for a position, <br /> 44 getting a list of names and then being critical of the process when it comes time to make the <br /> 45 actual appointment. He said this is problematic and not transparent. <br /> 46 Commissioner Rich said certain boards need to be treated differently and sometimes <br /> 47 more information is needed. <br /> 48 <br />
