We strive to provide a stimulating, inclusive, and accessible resource in Orange County as a catalyst for
sharing of ideas and inspiration, forming partnerships using art as a medium for communication and community
building.
The Mission of the Franklin Street Arts Collective is to support the local arts community and promote a
vibrant downtown Chapel Hill through exhibits, events, programs, and educational outreach through FRANK
Gallery.
Our Franklin Street gallery was established in 2010 with 20 artist members who conceived, created, and
now operate FRANK. The town of Chapel Hill, the Downtown Partnership, local businesses, and individuals
provided initial funding to launch FRANK. The gallery showcases contemporary art by established local and
regional artists, exhibiting the work of more than 200 artists, attracting more than 15,000 people a year to the
Gallery and downtown Chapel Hill.
Audiences Served, Outreach and Education Programs
With membership, private donor, sponsorship, and grant support, FRANK offers artist salons, art
critique, and educational programs for children, teens, seniors, and refugee populations. Our Community
Education and Outreach Gallery was officially designated to host 2-4 major projects with exhibitions and
focused programming per year to express our mission of accessibility and inclusivity. Due to popularity of these
efforts,we have designated this gallery to promote an expanded line up of programs that include our work with
pre-schoolers-high school students, college students, and seniors. This year we received a Declaration of
Excellence from Mayor Kleinschidt during our Autism Awareness forum. We host nontraditional art exhibitions
including cross cultural partnerships with schools, mental health agencies, and hospital programs. For the first
several years we offered weekly salons on Thursday evenings with 15-60 participants. We currently produce an
intensive program that is coordinated with our outreach gallery and have streamlined our Thursday music and
educational salons to twice a month FRANK with 30-60 participants per salon. Member artists and consigners
share their work and methods with the community. Guest artists read original poetry, present theatrical skits,
and perform traditional and experimental music.
For children and teens, member artists regularly partner with Kidzu, the Sacrificial Poets, and
McDougle Elementary School. Last year we added the Karen Youth Group for Burmese refugee children,
Phillips Middle School, UNC photojournalism class' The "3 7"' Frame. For seniors FRANK hosts programs for
the Chapel Hill Senior Center, Meadowmont, and Triangle area retirement centers. For health care patients
FRANK provides support and activities for the UNC Health Care System; Recreational Therapy and Child Life
Center, the pediatric ward at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Brushes with Life, a
community health organization exhibiting artists with mental illness. Teens from the iCANcer photo program
sponsored by the physical therapy program at the University of North Carolina Hospitals' Pediatric
Hematology/Oncology Unit visited our 2013 OCAC sponsored teens photography exhibition. With grant
support from OCAC, FRANK offered its first series of educational workshops for adults offering drawing,
photography, and singing. Member artists have demonstrated traditional pottery techniques, black-and-white
and infrared photography, encaustic painting, watercolor techniques, eco farming, dance, bookmaking as art,
wallpaper and tile design and drawing.
