ORANGE COUNTY FIRE RESCUE STUDY
SOUTH OP:ANGE COUNTY
RESCUE SQUAD
Overview

This section will be organized a little differently given the nature of the rescue
squads. The Squad has two stations from which it responds to calls. The Squad
does not serve a defined response area, and for the most part, the Squad is not a
first responder organization. However, the Squad does provide emergency
ambulance service to the University of North Carolina -Chapel Hill (University)
campus and environs on Thursday, Friday and Satuxday nights from 1800 hours in
the evening until 0600 hours the following morning. When on duty, this crew also
provides service to the greater Orange County community when it is either the
closest unit or the only unit available because Orange County EMS is busy on other
calls. In essence, the duty crew provides Orange County EMS with reserve capacity.

The Squad provides the University and the greater Orange County community with
EMS planning, coordination, and response coverage during special events, such as
game day, High School football games, and Franklin Street parties (Halloween,
etc.).

The Squad experiences about 600 patient contacts and 360 transports per year.

The Squad's Technical Rescue division provides services statewide when called
upon. Recently, the State of North Carolina called upon the Squad to provide Swift
Water Rescue services to the western. counties of North Carolina when hurricanes
were ravaging the region. The Technical Rescue division sees action less than ten
times a year, which emphasizes the considerable dedication from its personnel
given the extensive continuing education and training these disciplines require.

The Squad operates out of two stations: 202 Roberson Street, Carrboro, and 261 S.
Churton Street, Hillsborough. The Squad also uses an apartment, provided by
UNC-CH, for use by the ambulance duty crew when they are on duty.
