2 <br />Department on Aging <br />2. The Department on Aging has received notification from the State of additional Work First <br />funds of $10,253 for the current fiscal year. These funds will cover the costs of vehicle <br />repairs for Work First clients. This budget amendment provides for the receipt of these funds <br />from the State for the above purposes. (See Attachment 1, column #2) <br />3. At its January 24, 2006 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners approved the <br />Department on Aging Eldercare Services Division's participation in a Preventive Home Visit <br />Research Project with the UNC Occupational Science Division. UNC has recently received <br />confirmation of these funds from the. National Institute on Aging for this project and is ready <br />to begin the project on January 1, 2008. The project is scheduled to end on June 30, 2008. <br />The Project will study the impact of preventive home visits made to seniors (age 75+). The <br />UNC Occupational Science Division will be the fiscal agent for the grant and reimburse the <br />Department on Aging for County expenses associated with the study. This budget <br />amendment provides for the receipt of the anticipated $18,792 reimbursement for the above <br />stated purpose. (See Attachment 1, column #3) <br />Health Department <br />4. The Health Department has received notification of the receipt of Eat Smart Move More <br />grant funds totaling $16,858 from the North Carolina Division of Public Health. This <br />continuation grant will provide funds for health educators to work with the faith community to <br />start community nutrition and exercise programs. <br />The Health Department, in collaboration with Cooperative Extension Orange County Service <br />Center, Orange Congregations in Mission, and UNC-Chapel Hill Program on Ethnicity, <br />Culture and Health Outcomes, will train representatives from local churches to establish <br />health teams at their churches. Teams will develop programs to promote better nutrition and <br />increased physical activity for community members. Participating churches will be eligible <br />for mini-grants of up to $500 to fund specific projects. The primary focus of the intervention <br />will be residents in the northern portion of Orange County. This budget amendment provides <br />for the receipt of these funds for the above stated purpose. (See Attachment 1, column #4) <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: Financial impacts are included in the background information above. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board of County Commissioners <br />approve the budget ordinance amendments. <br />
