AGENDA ITEM # 17A 'r
3
STATEMENT TO NORTH CAROLINA BOARD OF TRANSPORTATION
JUNE 5, 1979
1. The Orage County Commissioners respectfully request that Highway #I5- 501
from the Dorgan Creek bridge, south of Chapel Hill , to the Orange-Chatham
County line be added to the seven year Highway Improvement Program. The
design of this well-travelled road is not adequate to handle the current
daily traffic volume. We call your attention to two areas in particular:
a) The intersection of Farrington Road near
the Morgan Creek bridge and
b) Smith Level Road near the Starpoint Shopping Center.
It appears from observation that four laving these two critical areas
would reduce the serious congestion and hazardous conditions. From observation,
one cannot de I termine if this entire stretch of # 15-501 merits four laning at
this time. We would, therefore, request that NC Department of Transportation
examine this possibility and schedule the necessary improvements to bring
this highway Ip to a safe standard based on the current and projected traffic
volume.
2. The Orange County Commissioners request that a redesign of the intersection
of the 54 Bypa s and Pittsboro Road be included in the seven year Highway
Improvement Program. The current design does not allow a smooth and safe
flow of traffic to exit and enter the 54 Bypass south of Chapel Hill .
I
