M <br /> STATEMENT TO NORTH CAROLINA BOARD OF TRANSPOi?lATION <br /> w <br /> JUNE 5, 1979 <br /> 1. The Orange County Commissioners respectfully request that <br /> Highway 15-501 from the Morgan Greek bridge, south of Chapel Hill, to <br /> the Orange-Chatham County line be added to the seven year Highway Improvement <br /> Program. The design of this well-travelled road is not adequate to handle <br /> the current daily traffic volume. We call your attention to two areas in <br /> particular: <br /> a) The intersection of Farrington Road near the Morgan <br /> Creek bridge, and, <br /> b) The intersection of Smith Level Road and rr I5-501 near <br /> the Starpoint Shopping Center, especially to include an <br /> improved turn radius between 7r 15-501 and Smith Level Road. <br /> It appears from observation that four laning these two critical areas <br /> would reduce the serious congestion and hazardous conditions. From observation, <br /> one cannot determine if this entire stretch of n 15-501 merits four laning at <br /> this time. We would, therefore, request that NC Department of Transportation <br /> examine this possibility and schedule the necessary improvements to bring <br /> this highway up to a safe standard based on the current and projected traffic <br /> volume, <br /> 2. The Orange County Commissioners request that a redesign of the <br /> intersection of the 54 Bypass and Pittsboro Road be included in the seven <br /> year Highway Improvement Program. The current design does not allow a smooth <br /> and safe flow of traffic to exit and enter the 54 Bypass south of Chapel Hill. <br /> 3. The Orange County Commissioners support the Chapel Hill Board of <br /> Aldermen's request to include the four laning of the current r 15-501 Bypass <br /> from the Eastgate Shopping Center to the Morgan Creek bridge in the seven <br /> year Highway Improvement Program. The Orange County Commissioners also <br /> support the Chapel Hill Board of Aldermen's request to include the four <br /> laning of Manning Drive from # 15-501 Bypass to Memorial Hospital and the <br /> request to include the four laning of Pittsbaro Road from Manning Drive to <br /> the Morgan Creek Bridge in the seven year Highway Improvement Program. <br />
